Why should structured packing installation be staggered

The main reasons for the staggered installation of structured packing (usually 90°) are as follows:

Prevent trench flow

Staggered installation can destroy the linear channel (channel flow) that may be formed in the packing layer, and make the gas-liquid phase form a more complex flow path on the surface of the packing layer, so as to improve the mass transfer efficiency.


Optimize gas-liquid contact

Through the vertical arrangement of the corrugated direction of the adjacent layer filler, the gas-liquid disturbance can be enhanced, the effective mass transfer area can be expanded, the liquid can more evenly wet the surface of the filler, and the separation effect can be improved.


Enhance structural stability

Cross-stacking can reduce the displacement or collapse of the packing layer due to gravity or air flow, ensure that the packing is tightly fitted to the tower wall, reduce pressure drop and extend service life.


Adapt to different working conditions

Some specially designed fillers (such as wire mesh corrugated fillers) can be staggered to further optimize the porosity and pressure drop performance to meet the requirements of precision rectification or high load scenarios.


Example installation specifications:

According to the standard operation procedure, except for the first layer, the corrugated direction of each subsequent layer of packing should be 90° interlaced with the lower layer. During installation, refer to the suggestions provided by Henerwo Chemical. During installation, special tools should be used to adjust the tightness and ensure that the upper and lower disks of the packing layer are in close contact.
